Blink! and Ten Thousand Waves

Blink! was very fun and interesting to go to. It was nice to step out of the lecture space and see a wide variety of digital art in person at the Denver Art Museum. Now that I have been learning about digital art for almost a year, it was really exciting to see this type of work in its natural space. I find myself more aware of the topic and have developed a great appreciation for this type of artistic work. The celebration of light, sound and moving image was truly exciting, and the use of non-traditional methods to express an idea was inspiring. Every corner I turned I was in awe by the refreshing and just plain fun art works that there were to see. It was interesting to be completely surrounded by art showing the transformation of technology since the early 90‘s. It brought to light how much technology really influences our thoughts, emotions and most everything surrounding us. Making it in the artistic world, as we all know, is no easy feat ... I felt very proud to be there.

I was also very inspired by Isaac Julien’s lecture and film “Ten Thousand Waves”. So much so in fact, that I thought I would take this opportunity to remix his work:

There is a movement. In hopes of finding a better life. One in which he yearns to be free, but can not find his way. The tide comes in quickly, pulling his helpless soul out to sea. He thought he could get close, that he was getting closer, but he lost focus. Pain. I saw it coming. His vulnerability kills me. Heartache. How do you rescue your own hero?
His soul is scattered across the sea. He will not rest until he reaches the land of the yellow earth.
One survivor ... but has he survived? One thousand waves calls my fathers sorrow. Go home and pray. Homesick. Heartsick. Marching. Obey. From east to west he drifts from shore to shore. Unseen. Unheard. Unfulfilled.
I see you Dad. I hear you.
Come home soul. The wind is blowing from the north pole. All of your dreams are not your dreams. Oh soul - speak only to the hearts that cup it tight. Let go. From ghost to goddess I will protect you. I promise to cup your heart tight.
